Getting meditation instruction where you live has never been easier.

First of all you can find meditation classes in practically any city in America.  I've been to tiny towns in the middle of nowhere that offer free meditation instruction at the YMCA.  It used to be possible to list every meditation retreat or spiritual retreat center in America in a book that you could fit in your back pocket.  But now, there are meditation teachers meditation centers in every state of the Union, often within a few hour's drive.

When I began meditation in 1970, there were very few meditation books and getting meditation instruction required quite a bit of research and often quite a bit of travel.  The only way to learn meditation was by doing a meditation retreat. Just recently, I looked at my local bookstore and sound over 50 books with meditation instruction.

Mindfulness meditation is being taught at the nearby hospital.

In my local college's catalog's list of classes meditation is something you can do for credit!

A quick search online reveals dozens of courses that you can take on the Internet.  Looking at the catalog from Sounds True or Gaiam,  you'll find hundreds of meditation CDs, meditation tapes and meditation home study courses.

The advantage of all of the off-line material that is books tapes etc., is that you can work through them at your own pace and you have them as a reference to come back to at any time.

Ideally, though, you'll want to find either private or group meditation instruction, whether it's on the phone, in person, or over the Internet. And the reason is simple.  Questions will arise in your practice that, even though the answer might be written in a book, would affect you more if you heard it personally from a meditation teacher or a spiritual friend, someone who's been practicing and maybe has gone through what you're currently experiencing.

What I found as a someone who offers meditation instruction, is that when someone is having what seems to be a big problem with their meditation practice, the solution is almost always a very small pointer or suggestion.
