MeditationTruth.com is a site dedicated to examining the techniques and teachings of meditation.
We don't start with the idea that "meditation works" but, instead, investigate fundamental ideas about meditation, why we meditate, getting the results of meditation, and more.
For example, we know hundreds of people who say they can't meditate because they can't still their mind. Well, one thing we investigate here is: Does meditation require stilling the mind? If so, are the techniques most commonly taught the best ways to do that? What if you could get the benefits of stilling the mind, without having to still the mind?
We know that this level of inquiry is unusual in the spiritual arena. And we hope that by diving into that inquiry we'll not only explode any mythology that causes more suffering than it cures, but also find easier and more reliable technologies for getting the value of a meditative practice… or maybe find that one can get the benefits without needing a meditation practice at all!
Lead Investigator - Steven Sashen
Steven Sashen began meditation at 8 years old and spent 30 years actively practicing Buddhist, Hindu and Kabbalistic meditation (not all at the same time!).
He also became a cognitive psychology researcher at Duke University. In 2001, the two interests met and Steven was inspired to bring his understanding of scientific research into the workings of perception and the mind to his meditative practice.
This led to some radical, provocative, and often controversial ideas about meditation and the spiritual path (here's one: The Buddha didn't reach a state of enlightenment).
This investigation also led to a novel set of meditation practices that can produce dramatic results in just moments, the Instant Advanced Meditation Course.
Steven lives in Boulder, Colorado with his wife, Lena Phoenix, author of The Heart of a Cult and the upcoming Gurus Behaving Badly: And Other Potholes on the Spiritual Path
